Local newspaper circulation is rapidly declining. Thousands of local newspapers have closed in recent years. Over 65 million Americans live in counties with only one local newspaper or none at all.


Clara Hendrickson identifies the major reasons local newspapers are currently undergoing a crisis. These include the changing tastes of news consumers as people become more inclined to follow national news outlets, local newsrooms losing advertising revenues to Google and Facebook, aggressive cost cutting measures by some of the largest local newspapers and the declining capacity of local newsrooms to investigate potential stories.
